“Faculty Colloquium: The Book”--participant and presenter for Washburn University’s 2010 Faculty Colloquium. I will present a lecture and demonstration on the materials and techniques of medieval manuscript illumination, and discuss the history of the illuminated book from the Middle Ages to today.

“Medieval Illumination Workshop”-- This six-week workshop was held at the Mulvane Museum on the campus of Washburn University in Topeka, KS. Participants produced a small work in the medieval style using a 4X6 piece of sheepskin parchment, hand-made paints and raised gilding.

“Methods and Materials of Medieval Illuminators”-- Guest Lecture for World Literature seminar, Longview Community College, in Lee’s Summit, MO. A demonstration of the methods and materials of medieval scribes and illuminators.

“Materials and Techniques of Medieval Manuscript Illumination”-- An interactive demonstration of illumination materials and techniques. Demonstration includes discussion of the manufacture and preparation of parchment; the sources and variety of ground pigments; traditional recipes form binders, glues and gesso; medieval painting techniques; and the technique for raised gilding. Participants will get to see and feel (and smell!) all the ingredients, assist in making paint, rabbit skin glue and gilding gesso as well as observe the application of gold onto a prepared surface.
